About Gombe Stream National park
Gombe national park is located in the west of Tanzania, Kigoma region, on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika. Gombe is the smallest national park in the country sitting on a total surface area of 13.5 square miles. Its topography is dominated by 13 streams that run down the escarpment up to the sandy beaches and steep valleys covered with vegetation ranging from the tropical rainforests, grasslands to woodlands.   Gombe national park is a natural habitat for several small primates including chimpanzees, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, red colobus, beachcomber olive baboons, and red-tailed monkeys. The chimpanzees are the most popular of all the primates and also there is a rare occurrence of red-tailed monkeys and blue monkeys crossbreeding in the forest.  The park is also home to over 200 species of birds, most notably the African fish eagle, Kenya rufous sparrow, Livingstone’s turaco, Palm-nut vultures, and African paradise flycatcher.  Other animals present include bush pigs, hippos, snakes, and leopards.   Gombe is a famous site where Jane Goodall an American primatologist did her research work on chimpanzees in 1960. Her Works were groundbreaking, before that the chimpanzees were only known to share 98% same genetic code with mankind but little was known about their social behavior and community structures which was discovered and revealed in her research. Her chimpanzee behavioral research was conducted on the Kasekela chimpanzee community which has been in existence in the forests of Gombe national park for over 60 years and has featured in several documentaries and books around the world.
